Sylvester ("The Queen of Disco") was one of the very first openly gay entertainers - making him an icon in the LGBT community. Sylvester was definitely a pioneer - when his record label told him to "butch up" his look in order to sell more records, Sylvester responded by showing up to meetings in full drag. Diva!
Sadly, Sylvester died of AIDS-related complications in 1988 at the age of 41. But his music lives on forever - here he is asking that eternal question: Do You Wanna Funk?...
Now THAT's a tune. Sylvester fucking ROCKED!
ReplyDeleteDon't miss the next episode of "Unsung" on TVONE next Sunday if you love Sylvester!!! They will feature this groundbreaking diva! Before there was RuPaul, there was Sylvester!
ReplyDeleteHe was definitely a pioneer for the LGBT movement in music. Also on a personal note - I always admire him for his stance and bravery!
