R.I.P Reginald Doucet Jr.

Tragic news out of Los Angeles. Former college football player and current fitness model Reginald Doucet Jr. was shot and killed by the LAPD on Friday:

Two officers responded to a disturbance in the 5200 block of Crescent Park about 3:30 a.m. and were confronted by the man, who was not wearing any clothes and was yelling at officers, said LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith.
The officers calmed the man down and talked him into putting on his boxers, but he ran away when they attempted to apprehend him. A scuffle ensued and one of the officers shot the man twice, Smith said.
The man was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead soon after.
This is so sad - I've had pictures of Reggie on my computer for a while - and now I have to use them in an obituary post.

Thanks to Mechadude for the heads-up.

  1. Is it just me, or are we turning into a police state? What exactly was he doing that required the use of lethal force?

  2. Why did they shoot him if he was running AWAY?

  3. I am with Marker... and though he was fit, he was also a wide reciever, i.e. NOT BIG. I think his biggest mistake was being black and caught in front of the friggin' LAPD...

  4. How horrible and sad.

Not surprised by LAPD, however this sort of tragedy is becoming more common.

  6. Argh - I just hate this. Look at that first pic of him - what a glorious smile. (And then look at that last of him . . . what a glorious - um, photo!)

All that aside - unless DDust is vastly under-reporting the facts of the case (which I don't think he is), what on Earth was it justified for an LAPD officer to kill this guy? Clearly there were mitigating circumstances.

Fuck. A large segment of our fellow 'murcans think they need to worship guns and the use of firearms in order to feel like they still maintain some small element of control over their lives. This leads to a worshipful obeisance towards all things militant - i.e. the armed forces and the police. As a result, this case will not be investigated, and the murder of a probably mentally ill, non-threatening man will not be investigated. Oh and by the way he's black, so forget it. He must have been up to no good.

    [/snark for that last sentence]

  9. This is heartbreaking. The life of a black man is worthless to the LAPD. This gun worshipping society is going to hell in a handbasket. My heart goes out to the Doucet family and his friends. May he rest in peace and may the bastards that killed him rot in hell even if they do have badges!
