Today's Breakfast

Cantaloupe and Watermelon

Like a few of you, I got a "Bad Day" (oooh, it was B-A-D) out of my system yesterday - but today will be a "Good Day", I promise you.

BTW - here's a little trick I did with my breakfast cantaloupe and watermelon. Last night, while cutting up my melon for this morning, I noticed that the cantaloupe was a tad past its peak ripeness. I like my melon to be REALLY sweet - and the cantaloupe was just a little off. But the watermelon was nice and sweet - so I mixed the two together and let them sit in the fridge overnight. Et voila! The cantaloupe took on some of the sweetness of the watermelon - thus providing me with a fabulous breakfast.

  2. David,

Good to hear that you got back on that horse this morning! It is a challenge to change and it takes time to get to the goal, but you will succeed in your quest. Just stay the course even when you slip - get back up and move forward like you did this morning.

BTW: While melon and fruits are good for you (and much better than pastries, pasta and such), be careful with them as you are trying to lose weight. Melon has a very high glycemic (sp?) index and will likely make you very hungry after about an hour or so - straining your determination to be good!

A less stressful way to have your melon and still stay on track is to eat about a 1/4 of that bowl and add a 2 egg omelet (1 whole egg and 1 or 2 egg whites and maybe some ham, onions or whatever you like (easy on the cheesy!)) or some other protein source. The protein will help reduce the blood sugar spike that the melon will cause and will digest more slowly keeping you satisfied longer. So, don't deprive yourself of tasty foods, just temper your consumption (smaller portions) and add some lean protein and maybe a small amount of some fiber (if your digestion is slow) into the mix.

If you are starting to exercise and find long session at a gym (or such) difficult to manage, you may want to try doing very short 10-20 minute sessions in the morning and evening and taking a walk during lunch. Even simple things like doing lunges or squats as you brush your teeth helps! Just keep moving while you do these everyday things
and you will burn a ton of calories.

There are a ton of books, and people you can pay to tell you all this, but in the end it's pretty darn simple. Keep your portions small, eat more often and sneak in a bit of exercise throughout the day. This has worked for me for many years now!

    Best Wishes!

  3. Here's to the first of many consecutive good days! My main challenge today will be tracking my food and activity. Totally counting my housework as a workout today!

  4. yes, the evil stuff the rest of the people who live here bring in on the weekends.... put that as a goal for next weekend. REALLY think about eating it - really, how good is it???
My breakfast is nonfat greek yogurt, sliced strawberries and nuts (changes as to what) with dried currants (the only dried berry type stuff I can get without added sugar).
And COFFEE!!! We get up between 4.30am and 5am so that is a must.

  6. Weighed in - only coffee for breakfast as the cupboard was bare - cucumber/brie sandwich for lunch - salmon sushi & a green salad for dinner. planning on a (nonfat greek!) yogurt & fruit snack after my evening class. I have a miserable spring head cold so no exercise today. But still - A Good Day!

  8. This made me do some thinking about what would constitute a good day for me. For this first week, I decided a good day would include at least 20 minutes of exercise and no random snacking between meals. Keeping things achievable is important! Each week, I'll reevaluate what a good day will be. Weighed in at 218 today which, depressingly, is exactly where I started over two years ago at WW when I lost 45 pounds. Oh well. I did it before; I can do it again.

  9. Who knew you were such a chef?!

Or such a bitch for eating a perfectly healthy breakfast while I ate 3 scramble eggs WITH the yolk still in them...
still, no bacon and no salt... so imma call it a GOOD day!

  10. WillBeBi has it right, absolutely. Fruit alone does not a healthy breakfast make. You need protein, people! Your body has a lot of building to do after a night of sleep.
