A Step In The Right Direction


Last week, for the very first time in my life, I spoke with a Nutritionist regarding my (horrible) eating habits and my (record-high) weight. The service is/was free (through GMHC) and the appointment actually exceeded my expectations. The Nutritionist I spoke to was knowledgeable, empathetic and seemed eager to help me change my ways.

Ms. Nutrition gave me three goals to work on until I see her again in 3 weeks.

1. Only one diet soda per day. I'm supposed to drink water/seltzer instead.
2. Fast Food only once a week (as opposed to my normal 3-5/week). Just when the McRib came back! Damn! Damn! Damn!
3. Exercise at least 3 times per week.

As time goes by, she and I will add more goals to the mix. The idea is for me to slowly modify my behavior as opposed to going on a specific diet and changing everything at once.

As a matter of fact, right now I'm eating a bowl of homemade vegetable soup - which I whipped up this weekend. So far I'm off to a decent start.

  3. I like those goals!! And I loves homemade soup - is a staple around here. I found cubed butternut squash at the grocery store and I'm excited to roast them and then try them in a broth type soup.

  4. That soup looks delicious. :)

    Also, one step at a time really is the way to go. It's how I cut out my addiction to coke/caffeine (not THAT kind of coke).

    Now I only have a very small amount of coffee first thing in the morning and drink water the rest of the day. I had tried before to quit cold turkey and that didn't work (oy, the throbbing headaches that gave me). So I just gradually cut it down. None with dinner, then none with dinner or lunch. Then none at all. I did find that in the morning I really needed just a hint of caffeine to kick start me but overall I'm much, much happier now that I'm not a caffeine/sugar junkie.

  8. I have a number of friends who have successfully lost weight by working with nutritionists.

    I'd rather have a lovingly prepared bowl of home-made soup than an industrially manufactured sandwich.

    she's got all kinds of good free advice about organizing too.

    we use her recipes at least once a week and it's saved us a TON of money by cooking in bulk and freezing for another meal.

    again i am SO PROUD of you. you continue to inspire me :D

  13. Great. Another way to cut calories, gradually replace all of your bowls, plates etc. with ones that are one size smaller, hit thrift stores and asian makets and switch to various sizes of rice and soup bowls.

  14. Mmmm homemade soup.

    I'm always struggling to drink enough water. Sometimes I drop a flavored decaf tea bag into my ice water cup - it eventually steeps and flavors it. Celestial Seasonings Candy Cane tea is out already - minty!
