Boycott Cinemark!

Alan Stock, the head of the large movie chain Cinemark (which also goes by the names by Century Theatre, CineArts and Tinseltown) gave $9,999 to the 'Yes on 8' campaign - and a boycott has been called for. For a list of U.S. locations, go HERE.

No longer will individuals be allowed to fund hate and not suffer the consequences. Some will ask: Why boycott a company when it's the employees who will suffer? The answer to that is: actions have consequences. Mr. Stock makes his money from Cinemark. Mr. Stock uses that money to fund hate. Therefore, we should cut off his money, so he can no longer fund hate. If Mr. Stock cares about his reputation, the reputation of his company, and the well-being of his employees, he will think twice before helping Haters in the future.

BOYCOTT CINEMARK THEATERS. No more Mr. Nice Gay...

I think it is a dumb idea to boycott this company because of one guy.

I think we lost because stupid people fear us. Now we are going to work to scare the hell out of them with a boycott no one understands?

Is this best we can come up with?

Feel free to keep funding hate if you would like.

But people need to learn that actions have consequences. If you write a $10,000 check to fund hate, we are going to make you suffer the consequences.

It is no different than the Right Wingers who boycotted McDonald's when one of their gay executives was named to the board of the National Gay Chamber of Commerce. It may have seemed "dumb" to us, but the Wingnuts got what they wanted - the McDonald's exec had to step down.

The right wing uses boycott tactics all the time to achieve their goals - it's time we stop being nice and do the same.

Sorry if that sounds "dumb" to you - but it works.

Easy boycott for me- I hate those theatres! They are filthy and always filled with screaming kids!

Miss Ginger -

I saw Houston on their location list, and I thought of you.

Thank you for being such a SENSIBLE drag queen!

Honestly, I find it amusing when people want to decry ideas as "dumb", yet offer none of their own. It's fine if you disagree with an idea, but when you offer no alternatives of your own, what are you really accomplishing?

If you do not mind I'll post this on my blog and spread the word, of course giving credit where credit is due. I agree it is a persons right to support what they want, now on the other hand it is our right to spend our pink dollars in places that want us and do not encourage hate in any form.

Boycotts are effective ways of making our voices heard. I don't want my money funding causes I don't believe in, I speak with my dollars.

...but I have to admit, it's an easy boycott to do because I think we only have one Cinemark and it's so scuzzy that they'd have to pay me to go in.

Oh please you aren't going to make this guy pay. First, boycotts don't work. Since when?

Second, if it did work, you would wind up hurting thousands of people just to hurt one guy that probably wouldn't be hurt.

We need to quit turning friendly people against us with bad ideas like this. IMO

Boycotts are not hateful or unfair, they're a time-honored (remember those crazy New England colonists who boycotted British tea in the 1770's?) means of protest. I think it's a great idea, and if there were Cinemarks here (they're all Century Theaters in CA, I believe.) I'd do it.

And why did the guy give $9,999, eh? He wanted to hate on the gays without having to be taxed on his donation?

Don't H8 on love :D. --A message from your friendly expatriot Californians.

I'd say boycott 'til the end of time! Just the act along would bring attention to the cause. And I swear we GOT to stand & be counted. Vote with your hard-earned dollars. Hit them where it hurts most to Wing Nuts - Money! Instead of the comfort of hate mongering from behind the fence, let it be known H8 has consequences this time!

I'm with Miss Ginger. I'm going to change my plans for DQs birthday right now! We were going to take several friends to see Twilight and the theater we were planning on is Century. Time to find the closest Regal! I'll definitely be writing a letter as well, just so they know what I think of their sorry hateful selves.

Since this report speaks directly about the movie "MILK" and its relevance to today's issues, it seems worth remembering Milk's own feelings with Proposition 6. He felt that, if Prop. 6 was passed, that the gay community would rise up in an angry and perhaps violent offensive that would have been entirely understandable. The unfinished business of Milk's time is still affecting us today and it this generations responsibility to carry it forward.

We are not in the midst of a polite debate. We are not haggling over a trinket in a foreign bazaar. Prop 8 singles out gays. It strips them of rights. It undermines the very foundations of the Constitution of the country - which has no relationship to biblical belief or religious fanaticism. If gays are going to be singled out through the passage of this proposition, then the supporters of it should expect to be targeted themselves. If they are in positions of power, such as CEO of Cinemark, then the foundations of their power ought to be attacked and brought down.

Cinemark is fair game as is the Mormon Church. We are not engaged in a friendly disagreement. These people have mobilized to strip Americans they don't like or respect of their civil rights. That's not politics. That is war. Gays have learned how to fight back and we ought to throw our full fury at individuals who funded this fight against us AND their power bases - period.

Civil Rights or Civil War. Gay Rights Now!
