Legendary: Crystal LaBeija, Remixed
Lady Bunny did a short post this week about Crystal LaBeija (above), and I'm taking the liberty of expanding upon it a little bit...
Crystal LaBeija was a legendary drag queen and the founder of the House of LaBeija. From wiki:
In 1977 an imperious, elegant queen named Crystal LaBeija announced that a ball she’d helped put together was being given by the House of LaBeija, as in House of Chanel or House of Dior. It was a p.r. gimmick, something to add a little more panache and, not incidentally, to increase the luster of Crystal LaBeija. The concept caught on, and suddenly every ball was being given by a house. Some queens named their house after themselves, like Avis Pendavis’ House of Pendavis or Dorian Corey’s House of Corey. Others took the names of established designers like Chanel or St. Laurent.
Crystal gets a shout-out at the very beginning of Paris Is Burning, when Pepper LaBeija (below) introduces herself (I'm reciting from memory, so this probably isn't an exact quote):
![]() |
| "My name is Pepper LaBeija - legendary Mother of the House of LaBeija. Not the founder - Crys was the founder. I just rule it now ... with a soft glove". |
But Crystal LaBeija is probably best known as the sore loser in 1968's drag beauty contest documentary, The Queen. Please watch this all the way through - this rant is TRULY legendary...
"Look at her makeup! It's TURRIBLE!!"
Well, it took 40+ years, but Crystal LaBeija has been remixed - and it's pretty damn hot:
This track is the OPPOSITE of "turrible" - it's FIERCE.

Musto "Interviews" Dragtestant Carmen Carrera
Michael Musto was contacted by RuPaul's Drag Race competitor Carmen Carrera's "people" (person?) for an interview. But the young Ms. Carrera didn't bother to answer Michael's questions - so Musto answered them himself. Here's an excerpt:
Musto: You've said that you wouldn't date someone who does drag because of the drama involved. But you're someone who does drag. Should people not date you?
Carmen: You mean like when they date the milk at Dagostinos? (pause)
Musto: Never mind, dear. Good luck on Drag Race.
Carmen: Don't you play the race card with me, you shady biatch!
Read the entire "interview" HERE.

Happy Birthday to Lady Chablis
Lady Chablis - the star (IMO) of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and the forever Queen of Savannah - celebrates her birthday today. I'm not going to mention her age (a true lady never tells) - let's just wish "The Doll" a very Happy Birthday!
BTW - if I could marry a picture, I would marry the one at the top of this post. Truly a masterpiece!

Gay.com Premieres Web Series The Queens of Drag NYC
I got an email from my buddy Jack Mackenroth, who wanted me to pass this information along to the BunnyNation. From the official Press Release...
Gay.com (www.gay.com), the world’s leading gay social networking site, has teamed up with film and television producer Larry Kennar (The L Word, Barbershop, 50 First Dates), designer and reality TV veteran Jack Mackenroth (Project Runway: Season 4), and award-winning producer/director John Rutherford (eXposed) to air the original web series The Queens of Drag: NYC. The 8-episode series, which explores the audacious New York drag scene, debuts exclusively on Gay.com on September 8, 2010.
“The fascinating part is how they all lead dual lives, both of which are incredibly challenging. Most people think of drag as glamorous, fun fluff. But it’s actually an underappreciated art form that requires an enormous amount of talents and guts. These queens are at the top of their game in the most competitive city in the world and each has a unique story to reveal underneath the wigs and makeup," says Jack Mackenroth .
Legendary drag diva Lady Bunny leads the all-star Queens of Drag: NYC cast, which includes the ageless and evergreen Hedda Lettuce, uber-glam Sherry Vine, the vivacious Bianca Del Rio, sexpot songstress Peppermint, and the classless and campy Mimi Imfurst. Breakout performers Epiphany, Logan Hardcore, Dallas DuBois, and Acid Betty join the divas for their outrageous adventures.
Each Queens of Drag: NYC webisode on Gay.com focuses on an individual diva as she navigates life as a drag superstar in the world’s most amazing and unforgiving city, New York . The series shows the real grit of the drag queens’ lives – both in and out of makeup – as they struggle to conquer the New York nightlife scene.
For more information about the series and to view the trailer, please visit www.gay.com/queensofdragnyc/ or visit the official Queens of Drag: NYC Facebook page HERE.

Check out this short video about this year's Night of a Thousand Gowns - the annual fundraiser which took place last month here in NYC. The queens of the Imperial Court do it RIGHT - and have raised a boatload of money for HIV/AIDS causes over the years.

Wig-Snatching 101
One of the losers of the Miss Brazil Gay 2009 pageant was NOT happy with the outcome - and decided she was taking home the crown instead ... along with the winner's wig. Don't mess.
I would like to suggest the "Wig Grab" as a potential challenge for the upcoming season of RuPaul's Drag Race. And this Brazilian Ho needs to be the guest judge.

Pam Anderson Needs to Work on Her Tuck

Is it just me, or does Pam Anderson look like a messy drag queen who's losing her "tuck"? In the immortal words of RuPaul: "There are still a lot of snakes on this mother-fucking plane"! Check your bulge, girl.
Speaking of RuPaul, season two of RuPaul's Drag Race is casting now.

Slingbacks And Syrup

I have just seen the feel-good documentary of the decade! Slingbacks and Syrup, starring our very own Dust Bunny Amber LeMay (below), was recently a huge hit at the Vermont International Film Festival - and I can see why. It is funny, touching, and extremely entertaining. By the way - this was the only picture I could find where our dear Amber didn't have a drink in her hand...
Anywhoo, the documentary follows the "ladies" of the House of LeMay, a troupe of drag queens from the fictional Hot Damn Trailer Park in the fictional town of Beaver Pond, VT. The LeMay's story is told by filmmaker/director Russell Dreher, who met the LeMays during his graduate studies in Burlington, VT. Dreher tells us how this troupe of hilarious, outrageous, and GORGEOUS performers changed his life through their friendship.
We meet (from left to right, below) Lucy Belle LeMay, Amber, Marguarite LeMay, and Liza Little. We also get to meet the real men behind the mascara - and all the behind-the-scenes work they do to raise money and awareness for various charities and good causes.

Better yet - go HERE and purchase a copy of Slingbacks and Syrup for the drag queen/performer/glamour bitch in your life. It makes a perfect holiday gift or stocking stuffer.
Or, to purchase and watch on-line - go HERE. You'll be glad you did.

Celebrity Drag Queen Gumbo!

I don't know if you all realize this - but we have a true celebrity in our midst - the fabulous Miss Ginger Grant. Miss G was Houston's "Miss Mint Julep" last year, and has a gorgeous little blog (see it HERE).
Miss G is also a genuine Cajun - and recently shared her Gumbo recipe. Now I am by no means a cook - I scramble eggs every morning and I can make chicken enchiladas - but I am not too swift in the kitchen. But Miss G goes through all the steps of making Gumbo (with pictures) in such a clear and concise manner that I think even I could do it! She obviously completed the entire process before the cocktail hour - thus the clarity.
