Lost City Closes Up Shop

One of my favorite blogs about NYC, Lost City, has decided to call it quits.  Brooks, the blogger who ran Lost City, used his blog to celebrate "Old New York" - notable old restaurants, shops, stores, and buildings.  But recently he spent most of his time railing against the economic and political forces which have destroyed Old New York - making the city one big homogenized shopping mall for tourists and the rich.  I guess Brooks couldn't handle the disappointment of chronicling the loss of so many New York City landmarks, so he just gave up trying.

I completely agree with Brooks point of view, that economic interests shouldn't necessarily trump history every time.  I fell in love with sleazy, gritty Times Square (above and below) when Mama Bunny took me on a one-day theater bus trip from PA when I was about 13.  When I saw the unpolished, in-your-face, dirty (in many ways) city on that day, I KNEW it was where I wanted to live.

I know a preserved-in-the-bad-old-days Times Square wouldn't do anything for the economic development of the city, but there has got to be some kind of balance between "progress" and preservation.

If you have a chance, visit Lost City and say goodbye to Brooks and to the New York City I fell in love with as a kid.  And while you're there, you can explore Old New York as seen through one Blogger's eyes.

Lost City GOES OFF on Speakerphone D-Bags

O.M.G. - If you HATE people who insist on using speakerphone, then you must read Lost City's expose on speakerphone abusers.  Here's a tidbit...
Speakerphones are rudeness made physical. There's no excuse for them. You are not that busy that you can't pick up the phone. And if you are, hire another assistant, because you must be truly monumental in whatever your business is. No, you're not busy, you're just overly impressed with your many irons in the fire, and decadently slothful. What a feeling of prideful liberty it must be to not talk into a receiver but into the very air, as if the cosmos are awaiting your next command. Talk to the left, talk to the right, up, down, back, front—someone it still listening! My God, what weight your words have. And why shouldn't they? You're a living, breathing, vibrant being with a big office. That other person on the line is just a tinny voice inside a little box! The plebe! The insect!
Read the entire thing HERE.

I HATE speakerphones.  For years I took telephone delivery orders at a restaurant on the fancy-schmancy Upper East Side.  And anytime someone would call me using speakerphone I ALWAYS pretended I couldn't hear them...

Me: "Thank you for calling Sirabella's, how can I help you?"

Woman "preparing dinner" for her family (on speakerphone):  "Yes, I need an order for delivery".

Me (pretending the biatch's speakerphone wasn't working): "Hello? ... Anybody there?!? ... Hello???"

Woman (now YELLING into speakerphone):  "ORDER FOR DELIVERY!!!!!!"

Me"Hello?!? Hello?!?..."

Woman picks up her phone and proceeds with her order.  It worked every time and it was oddly satisfying making people actually pick up the phone.

Does anyone else have a problem with speakerphones?

BREAKING: Brooklyn Arby's Just Weeks Away!

According to the Lost City blog, the Arby's in Downtown Brooklyn is only weeks away from opening in the historic Gage and Tollner restaurant space. Cue my fat ass doing the HAPPY DANCE...

I feel kind of bad, because Lost City is an awesome blog about how we are losing the fabric of New York City to greedy corporate interests (like Arby's). Normally I'd agree - but I'd vote to put an Arby's in the crown of the Statue of Liberty if I could. Sorry Lost City, but on this one issue I'll have to disagree with you.

As a matter of fact, when I read this joyous Arby's news, the angels sang, the fairies danced ...
