Although this AWKWARD slow-dance clip isn't identified, I recognized it immediately as being from Dancin' On Air - an 80's teen dance show which was based in Philadelphia. The show was HUGE in  Central Pennsylvania (where I grew up) - and the regular dancers became mini-stars, with their own fanclubs and fanzines...

OMG - Bobby Catalano!!!! Take off your glasses - we wanna see your eyes!!!!! Sorry ... old habits...

Anywhore, Dancin' On Air was picked up by the fledgling USA network in 1986 and renamed Dance Party USA - but at that point I was in college and too drunk busy to care anymore.

BTW - did the girl in the cheerleader outfit at 0:16 look familiar?? That's Jersey girl and Intense Staring Champion Kelly Ripa - one of Dancin's "regulars".

Philadelphia With Auntie Flame

As I mentioned before, I spend a fabulous Saturday in the City of Brotherly Love - where I FINALLY got to meet Joy (above left, with Maddie). Joy, as many of you know, is The Grand Duchess of the Dust Bunnies and my "Auntie Flame".

That entire day is a little bit blurry for me - because I was fighting a cold and was under the influence of various medications. I DO recall having an absolutely marvelous time, however I'll let the more sober members of our group do the recaps: see Maddie's take HERE, and read Joy's recollection HERE. And yes, I am as surprised as you are to see "sober" and "Maddie" in the same sentence.

I WAS lucid enough, however, to get one "SIRveillance" shot...

Yes, that probably was a pistol in his pocket, because I don't think he was glad to see me.

Anywhore, it's weird to say I "met" Auntie Flame for the first time on Saturday, because we've emailed, commented on each other's blogs, and talked on the phone many times. In fact, hanging out with Joy was like hanging out with someone I've known my entire life. She was wonderful - as was her friend Tina.

Finally, I'd like to leave you with my favorite picture of the day. Joy really wanted to go to the Naked Chocolate Cafe - and when we did, she ordered the hugest Mocha Choca Latta Ya Ya chocolate drink thingy I've ever seen...

Joy looks really disappointed, doesn't she? ... ... ... cough, cough ... Size Queen! ...cough, cough, hack ... :)

Headed To The City Of Brotherly Love

I'll be spending the day in Philadelphia ... hanging out with Maddie and the Boy Toy (who live in the Philly suburbs) and Joy - who is visiting from Tennessee.

I am so looking forward to actually seeing "Auntie Flame" (Joy) face-to-face. Although I am fighting a cold (again) ... so I plan on packing DayQuil, NyQuil, AfternoonQuil, and everything else I can find at Rite Aid. I am determined not to let this cold ruin my day.

Posting will be light this entire weekend- and comment moderation will probably be delayed until I return home tonight.

Tonight's The Night: Phillies vs Yankees

Even though the covers of yesterday's NYC tabloids were vaguely homophobic ("Silly-delphia", "The Frillies" and Philly outfielder Shane Victorino badly photoshopped into a mini-skirt), they still made me giggle. Besides, I wouldn't mind seeing Mr. Victorino's real legs. He's kinda cute ... for a Philly.

Music Of My Life

Sabrina Johnston's "Peace In The Valley" takes me back to the time when I began exploring the world of gay bars/clubs. I vividly remember dancing to this song in Philly at a (now closed) club called "Kurt's", with my good friend Dennis. Good times.

Giovanni's Room Turns 35

Gay bookstores, once one of the backbones of urban gay culture, have been closing rapidly due to the popularity of the internet and huge book chains. But Philadelphia's gay bookstore - Giovanni's Room - recently celebrated their 35th anniversary. Read the story from Towleroad HERE.

When I came out of the closet in Central Pennsylvania, I would take periodic trips to visit my friend who lived in the gay neighborhood of Philadelphia. After spending Saturday nights at Stallions in Harrisburg (the local gay disco - which is still there), spending a weekend in an actual city was heavenly. Dennis lived right down the street from Giovanni's Room, and I always paid it a visit (and usually made a purchase). Those early "gay books" I bought really taught me a lot about being gay and gay culture - long before images like "Will and Grace" were available. I will always be grateful that Giovanni's Room was (and is) there.
