Abandoned Palace In Lower Manhattan

The 10-story building at 5 Beekman Street in Lower Manhattan looks just like any number of old buildings located in the oldest part of the city.  However, the inside of the building reveals some exquisite ruins...

The building was bought in 2008 by developers who wanted to turn it into a luxury hotel (just what Manhattan needs!).  But the bank who holds the loan on the property recently filed to foreclose, so this neglected but gorgeous building interior will remain for a little while longer.

BTW - if anyone is looking to buy me a Christmas gift, this building would be perfect.  I would totally open a go-go guy bar under the skylights!!

Isn't 5 Beekman Place where Auntie Mame lived in the musical "Mame"?

I wonder what it used to be. And what that real estate goes for?!?!?
My Dad worked in the first skyscraper ever built in San Francisco. By the time he worked there it was like dwarfed by all the other buildings.

Scott - Yes, 5 Beekman Place was where Auntie Mame lived - but that is on the Upper East Side. 5 Beekman STREET is in lower Manhattan - close to City Hall.

Froggy - It was built and used as an office building.

Scott -

Actually Ms. Dennis lived at #3 Beekman Place - I just looked it up.

Whata gorgeous building, and how horrible it isn't being used and cherished.

Mame why didn't you just move in here? I would have lent my design knowledge for free!!!

It's a shame those buildings are empty and going to waste. That one is beautiful and should be enjoyed.

looks like a location used in the movie version of Ragtime as the offices of Stanford White, I think...

A friend of mine (a native New Yorker) recently sent me this link, knowing my love of old buildings. The link she sent showed that things are still moving forward with it as a luxury hotel. We can only hope, because we can walk in and see that gorgeous atrium! XOXO
