Sylar Comes Out

Actor Zachary Quinto - known for his portrayal of the evil Sylar on Heroes, a young Spock in Star Trek, and several gay characters - has come out in an interview in New York Magazine:

Last year, the Times, in profiling him forAngels, noted that “the blogosphere is rife with speculation about his sexuality” but that “he prefers not to feed the rumor mill with either substantiation or dismissal.” That has changed. A little while later in our conversation, speaking of the cultural bipolarity that can see gay marriage legalized in New York in the same year that yet another gay teenager, Jamey Rodemeyer, was bullied and killed himself, Quinto says, “And again, as a gay man I look at that and say there’s a hopelessness that surrounds it, but as a human being I look at it and say ‘Why? Where’s this disparity coming from, and why can’t we as a culture and society dig deeper to examine that?’ We’re terrified of facing ourselves.”

National Coming Out Day - October 11

This was first posted on October 11, 2009 and is being reposted today, in honor of National Coming Out Day...

National Coming Out Day is an internationally-observed civil awareness day for coming out and discussion about gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) issues. It is observed on October 11 every year - and it began in 1988.

I was attending Penn State (and was in the closet) in the late 1980's - and I HATED "Coming Out Day". I was having on-the-sly sex with guys - but I only hung out with "straight" people (although a couple of those "straight" guys turned out to be as straight as I was). Hell, I even had a serious girlfriend for a while. So when those brave, openly-gay kids wore their Keith Haring National Coming Out Day T-shirts every October 11, it made me extremely uncomfortable. Especially since I "knew" a few of those kids (cough, cough) - but I didn't want my straight friends to find out.


After college, I moved back home to Central Pennsylvania and came out to everyone except my parents - although they definitely knew. Then, a couple of years after moving back home, I decided to move to NYC - just like hundreds of thousands of young gay people before me. I didn't want to be an actor, or a writer, or a fashion designer - and just wanted to live in NYC and be gay.

It's funny, I think I am probably among the last generations which found it necessary to move to a big city to "be gay". It seems that more and more, due to the internet and increased acceptance, kids don't automatically think they have to move to NYC or San Francisco if they happen to be gay. They can be gay in Allentown or Albany now if they want to. I'm not saying we don't have a long way to go - but you seem to find fewer people moving to cities these days for the reasons I did.

And after I moved to NYC, I finally came out to my parents ... via LETTER. Yes, I totally wussed out. And of course both of my parents were just as wonderful as they could be. But most surprisingly, both of them wrote me return letters which didn't contain the word "Duh!".

Keith Hamilton Cobb Is Gay ???

Actor Keith Hamilton Cobb - who appeared in All My Children, Andromeda, and Noah's Arc, has made it official - he is gay. [UPDATED: See bottom of this post]

Relaxing backstage at the Red Bull Theater in New York City, actor Keith Hamilton Cobb is adamant; “I never denied I was Gay,” he says.

Possibly best known for the super macho Tyr Anasazi on the sci-fi series ‘Andromeda’, Cobb was blase. “I mean I’m nearly fifty, never was linked with a woman. The few ‘red carpet’ affairs I attended were set up by the studio; an obvious set up. This can’t be a surprise.”

Sorry for being the barer of bad news Everyone, but the "article/interview" originally posted at Socyberty.com outing Mr Cobb turned out to be a colossal FAKE!!

It has now being removed from the site and its author has even changed their online name, possibly to escape a lawsuit by the actor.

I found Mr. Cobb an absolutely beautiful man from the first time I laid eyes on him, but never had ANY incline of him being gay...looks like my gaydar was right all along. DRATZ!!!!!

The link to the original story is indeed no longer working - so now I'm confused. Did he say it or not??? How do we know this was a fake quote?? Anybody have more information??? Feel free to leave it in the comments section and I promise to investigate.

Paranormal State Star Comes Out as Bisexual

According to EW, Ryan Buell - the star of A&E docuseries Paranormal State - reveals that he is bisexual in his new book Paranormal State: My Journey Into the Unknown. He also discusses his Catholicism and his struggle to reconcile his religion with his sexuality:

“I’ve decided to share my sexuality and struggle over faith in hopes that others will no longer feel as though they are alone or that they can’t be religious.”

I've watched Paranormal State before - mainly because Buell and his "researchers" are students or alumni of Penn State - my alma mater.  In fact, in the picture above, Buell is standing in front of Old Main - the building which houses the university President's office and other administrative offices.  And back in my day, the area in front of Old Main was a PRIME cruising ground after dark.  Not that I would know or anything...

Actually, the steps in front of Old Main was the very first place I met/hung out with a group of openly gay men.  On Friday and Saturday nights, a bunch of guys would gather on the steps to watch all the cruising, critique people's outfits, and generally act catty (you know how we do) - and I became part of the group.  Since I was in the closet during college, it was a BIG first step for me to actually hang out with these guys.  Granted, it was pretty late at night and the chances of one of my straight buddies walking past was pretty slim (all my friends lived off-campus at that point) - but it was still a big deal for me.  In fact, a couple of guys I met there became good friends even after college.

Anywhore, I just think it's kind of funny that bisexual Ryan had his picture taken in that particular spot.  Maybe he was planning on meeting "the girls" later.

Oh, one last thing, I once drunkenly passed out pretty much exactly where Ryan is standing - and slept there in a rum-induced coma until morning.

I am not going to be snarky about this - I'm truly proud of Ricky Martin for coming out.  Everyone takes a different journey ... now if someone could just steer Ricky's journey towards my apartment...

Brian Sims Tells His Story

In the fall of 2000, Brian Sims was a defensive tacke and the team captain of the Bloomsburg University (PA) football team, and in the video above he shares his story about coming out to his teammates.  Actually, as he says it, his fellow athletes "came out" to him.

Personal note:  He mentions being in Shippensburg, which is a small college town located about 15 miles from where I was born and raised.  I've been in Shippensburg many times (and even partied there), but I've never heard about any drunken Jello wrestling.

Brian Sims is now an attorney living in Philadelphia, where he is extremely active in LGBT issues.

Meredith Baxter Has a Big Case of "Teh Gay"

Holy moly - Meredith Baxter announced that she is a lesbian! I don't know why this is so shocking to me - but for some reason, it is.

Baxter decided to come out publicly after the National Enquirer ran pictures of her and her partner of four years on a lesbian cruise. Family Ties indeed!! BTW - what is it with lesbians and boats?!? Just askin'...

Anywhore - Meredith, who has been married (to men) three times and has five grown children, figured out she liked gals about 7 years ago. Baxter has been "out" to her friends and family for a while, but wanted to announce it publicly on her terms - instead of letting the tabloids do it for her.

Glee: I Laughed, I Cried, I Put A Ring On It

Glee continues to get better with each episode. The past two shows have dealt with FIERCE gay boy Kurt (played by Chris Colfer, above) coming out to his friends and family. And last night - fulfilling every sissy's wildest fantasy - he led the football team to victory. Right after the team worked some Beyonce...

But the best part came at the very end, when Kurt came out to his Dad. I literally laughed through my tears when his Dad replied "Yeah, I've known since you were three. All you wanted for your birthday was a pair of sensible heels". Scenes like this could end up being really offensive if done wrong - on Glee, they seem to do everything right.
