Real Sewer Alligator Emerges in Astoria!!!

Ok ... it was a BABY alligator and it probably didn't come from the sewer (even though legend says alligators live down there) - but it WAS spotted a few blocks away from my apartment.

Yesterday afternoon this 2 foot long cutie (above) was found hiding under a Datsun.  The police and Animal Control were called and they took the critter into custody and charged him with unlawful crawling and reptilian mischief.

Believe it or not, according to the story in the New York Times, Animal Control averages two to four alligator, crocodile or caiman calls per year.  Most of the times they are brought from the south as pets - but when they get too big people let them go.  Or turn them into handbags...

How on Earth did that thing get there! They are cute when they are little but they are still mean as snakes and can bite your hand off. Did you know that alligators are completely untamable? You could feed one for 100 years, and unlike most animals it would never learn to appreciate its food source. Just thought you should know....
