Friendship

Empress Dust Bunny Beth posted some thoughts the other day about “blog friends”. She had just returned from an out-of-state trip to see her daughter, and was able to see two of her blogger buddies who lived nearby. Beth talked about how her husband (and others) can’t understand how “blog friends” can actually be “real” friends.

Beth believes, as I do, that blog friend and real friends are one in the same. I connect with many of you WAY more than I talk to/email/etc. my longtime friends. I know more about many of your kids (Beth, Zombie Mom, Jennie) than I do about my dear friend’s newborn daughter. I have recently discussed NYC with Charlie, self-image with SailorAlphaCentauri, and EVERYTHING with my Darling Joy (AKA Dancing Flame). I consider all of them “friends” in one way or another.

I say all this because there is one person who in a few months has become a true friend to me – Dan. I have been depressed recently, and when I get depressed my weight and self-esteem issues seem to rear their ugly heads. Dan always seems to be able to talk me down and make me feel better – which is what true friends do.

I first came across Dan’s blog while trolling for fellow Top Chef fans. But when I read one of his posts about his love of fast food, I knew this was one fierce bitch. There are VERY few gay men out there who would admit to even walking into a McDonald’s to use the restroom, let alone talk about EATING there.

And when we figured out we are both going to New Orleans for Southern Decadence – I was SO excited. I now have someone who can tell me what in the HELL I did the night before. In years past, I would have to piece my night together, CSI-style, by reading the various bruises, stains, and bar stamps/wristbands on my body.

And besides, what’s not to love about a queen who loves Spam (the canned meat, not the email) and hates Oprah?

I love ya BIATCH! Thanks for putting up with all of my crazy.

And that goes for the rest of my Dust Bunny friends as well…
XOXOXOXO

Ahhhhhh... you are the best. I hope we can spend time together ITRW when I come to your fair city for my Cult photo shoot and some serious shopping!!!

I CANNOT wait to hear the stories of your adventures in my birthplace; New Orleans.

smooches

PS. Sorry, you have to juggle the double meanies of body image and depression - two of my old nemesis- bastards!

ya, depression sucks big time. if it wasn't for my very good friend, Prozac, I'd probably be 6 feet under by now. seriously. and body issues? we all have them. I'm just getting to the point where I don't give a shit what other people think!!! Especially people who say they love you....screw them! and if someone doesn't like the way I look, then DON'T LOOK AT ME!! easy to say, but sometimes hard to do.

You, my best girlfriend, mean the world to me. that's the honest to god truth...I value your frinedhip, your wisdon and your cattiness and snarkiness!!! you are FIERCE!!!! and if Zombie gets to meet you I will be SOFREAKIN JEALOUS!!!! I want to cut Dan cuz he gets to do bad, nasty things with you in New Orleans!!!! ;) Not really Dan, Love you girl!

I love you TRanny...just the way you are...mumu bathing suit or buck nekkid!!! some people you just "click" with and you're that person for me. I couldn't love or value you more if you were a member of my family....and believe me, you don't want to be cuz I have some f@#$%$ people in my family!!!

Zombie - I'd BETTER get to see you on your next NYC trip. Let's make Beth jealous!!!!

Dearest, Dearest, TrannyBeth - right back at ya, girlfriend. This is the honest truth - I didn't really start enjoying my blog and blogging until we found each other. Now I look forward to hearing from you each and every day. I love you, you fierce BIATCH!!!!

This is an awfully nice side of you. It's a warm, candid, open, natural you. I love your bitchy critiques, but that's more or less a personna. And who knows more than we, what multi faceted personalities gays are anyway.
Don't get me wrong. I love your wittiness in the critiques, but I like this addded dimension too. love to hear more.

Dear Charlie - thanks. I got more personalites than Sybil!

I never thought about "blog friends" in that way before. Maybe I should so that I can stop saying that I don't have any friends.

This has turned into a wonderful community, and I'm just glad to be part of it.

I'm always glad to know when someone has a strong support system, and Dan rocks major sockage for being there for you (I'm weird because I'm happy for other people when they're happy).

Unfortunately, I can't think of much else to say. Love you much, darling!

And stay fly, everybody ;-)

David Dust said...

To the flyest gal I know...

Right back at ya, Sailor darling!

XOXOXO

P.S. - You got TONS of friends here!!!

It is nice to see this side of you, David. There are few blogs I even go to check out, and only two I have posted on with any frequency. This would be one of them, and it is because of the warm and definitive glow from the grand Dust Bunny himself that has drawn such good, honest, kind and funny people together.

And I expect pictures from New Orleans.

David Dust said...

Mike and Howard - Thank you both. I always look forward to your comments.

Howard, I promise to take pictures - but only of my various bruises, stains, and bar stamps/wristbands....

XOXOXOXO

Blogging is a great way to meet friends! (Internet forums too, actually.) I've met dozens of people that way and usually end up meeting in person at some point. Just because there are two computers between you doesn't make the friendship any less real.

And...although I'm not a big fan of McDonalds in general, I think it's terrible that gay men feel they have to fit some physical & ideological image...it's self-stereotyping. You're just like everyone else - fat, thin, ugly, good-looking, smart, stupid - once in a while you just GOTTA have a cheeseburger and a milkshake. :)

You're beautiful the way you are, btw, inside and out. xoxoxo

Unknown said...

Oh, come on! I wanted pictures of men in various states of undress! Please? Pretty please with a condom on top?

David Dust said...

Darling Minx - Thanks dear. And if you'll remember, it was FAST FOOD that prevented US from meeting during your last trip to NYC. We'll hook up next time.

Howard. I will TRY. But I am a SERIOUS boozehound when I'm in NOLA. Operating a camera will be difficult...

XOXO

Whatever you do will be just fine, I am sure. I am just trying to live vicariously through you, since I have never been to Southern Decadence, but I long wanted to go. And it has been so long since I saw a naked man [internet porn excluded [LOL]], I thought some pictures might jog the memory!

You are the best, David!

I've made some great friends online. In fact, Charlie and I have known each other around 18 years and met in a free room for teachers in the very early days of AOL. Dark Ages times of the internet.

I've met several people in person who were cyberfriends and acqaintances. Knowing them through blogs has been the best, most accurate introduction to how they really are from my experience.

I just love you, David, and am glad we found each other through Bravo! You are a hoot and much more! We'd have lots of fun in person just as we do when we type to each other.

It's also fun to meet others through comments and links. We're a village!

David Dust said...

To my Darling Joy -

Beth is right - there are some people you just "click" with, and you are definitely one of them. You make me smile every day.

Goodness, this is getting to be a downright LOVEFEST up in here! Let's enjoy it while it lasts, because in 3 short weeks it'll be time for Project Runway, and the bitchiness will abound!!!!!

XOXOXOXO

Sailor - No, it's not weird to be happy for others when they are happy. It's being well-adjusted and emotionally healthy.

Howard - Maybe you can go to NOLA next year for Southern Decadence.

Beth - Did I drive near you in Ohio? I can't remember which part of the state you're in, and I read your whole blog! You are such a fierce tranny mess Empress Dust Bunny!

I had a Sonic cheeseburger and chocolate shake last night, which was probably a reaction from visiting vegetarians all weekend.

We love you right back, gorgeous. You up my fabulous quotient every time you comment. If I ever get to NYC, I'm so looking you up. Be afraid.

I agree with you guys. I find myself referring to "blog friends" in conversations, and the non-bloggers all look at me in a vaguely pitying fashion. But the bloggers know. I love having friends in far-flung places, giving me their various perspectives on things. It is my very favorite thing about blogging.

Now I have to go see Dan's blog. Ciao!

what a wonderful and sharing post ... and i believe this is soooo why sactofloyd and i (your little virtual stalkers over in northern california) **HEART** you so very much (and can see why others feel similarly)!!!

Jimbo said...

Dan...eh, he's okay. ;)

As for this medium and the people we call friends, I totally get that. While I haven't been a blogger quite as long as some of you, this medium has inspired me to share as I've read others' personal thoughts and musings. I get that connection that comes from it. I've been posting with friends on a message board for years and while I have never met some of those people in person, I feel as close to them as I do to our Dan. It's fascinating, really.

20 years ago, if someone had told you that some of your closest friends might be people you've never met in person, would you have believed them? I probably would not have.

David, thanks for sharing your soul with us. I'm still kinda new here but can tell that you're a kind, genuine person and it's a pleasure to visit this page. Plus I rather enjoy "Go-Go Wednesday," even if I have yet to see a picture of them. ;)

Awwwww What a sweet post. Some of my best and most reliable friends were online friends at first. xoxo

What a great post! And I agree. Blog friends are the best and are always willing to help you through the bad stuff.

And I'm so glad you are friends with Beth. But just remember, she is MY Beth, so don't get too close Mister! LOL (kidding).

David Dust said...

Jennie - thank you darling. Your blog makes me laugh every day. I had NO idea being a mom was so hard. Mama Bunny just sat around all day eating bon-bons and watching soap operas... (I'm just joking Mom - really!).

Maddie - You've known me longer than anyone here - and it's funny that now I have my blog, we "touch base" much more often than we did before. And you are right - there WERE holes in those bottles of Bacardi Limon ... it wasn't me that drank all that liquor. Damn leaky bottles!!!

Shirldsd & Sactofloyd - I welcome all stalkers, and I'm glad to have a growing "West Coast" contingent of Dust Bunnies!!!!

Jimbo - You are right, if someone would have predicted this in 1988 (I was in college - and no one even had COMPUTERS in their dorm rooms yet!), we would have never believed it. Take care of Dan - don't let him get too out of control - I need someone to talk me down from my crazy spells!

Renee - Thanks. That picture CRACKS ME UP every time I see it.

Dear Bina - Yes, I know you found Beth first - and I appreciate you sharing her fabulous butt with me!!

Dust Bunnies Rule!!!

XOXOXOXOXOXOXO

This has been a great love-fest. You are as awesome as always, and I think this is the first time anyone has accused me of being "well-adjusted and emotionally healthy," so thank you, Joy.

And thank you Mr. I-started-this! ;-)

David Dust said...

Dear Mark - That must be why I love YOU so much!!!

Sailor - yeah, who da thunk that DavidDust could have such a love-in?!? We're like a bunch of friggin' hippies up in here. And BTW - I happen to think your much more well-adjusted than you realize.

XOXOXO
