Most of you know that Colin Powell - the former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, National Security Advisor, and Secretary of State - endorsed Barack Obama yesterday.
While appearing on Meet The Press, Mr. Powell discussed seeing a picture of a fallen American Muslim soldier's grave - Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan. The picture he mentioned is above.
And here is a picture of the brave 20-year-old who gave his life for his country. A brave young American who just happened to be Muslim.

i had no idea why a colin powell endorsement was any big deal until i heard him give it... the man was so eloquent and straight-forward, and when he spoke about this picture and why "muslim" does not equal "terrorist" i seriously teared up. thank god someone made these comments on a major network; it's about time.
and of course, just as brokaw predicted, a few right-wingers (buchanan, limbaugh, george will) have already stated that powell's endorsement was based on race. i'm sorry, but as a highly-esteemed african-american REPUBLICAN general, esp one who has worked closely w/ every repub white house in recent history, i think colin powell deserves a little more respect; there are legions of republicans voting democrat this year, gen powell just happens to be the most high-ranking, well-respected of them.

I can't imagine the pain his mother must feel every time she hears their faith denigrated and sacrifice they made.
It saddens me that so many have lost sight of what makes this country so truly great: the freedom to follow your faith, be yourself and follow your dreams. My respect for Colin Powell (already great) has increased. The man is truly a hero.
I saw Powell on Meet The Press yesterday and was happily surprised at his endorsement of Obama, and saddened by the story of this young American solder with a "muslim" name.

Powell is so articulate. Loved the whole presentation he gave. Flawless diplomacy and meaningful to the last word. A great example of being an independent thinker whatever the cost. Our two lady Republican senators from Maine are courageous as well and seem to always think in terms of the issue, not the party. of course it cost them both the VP nomination for which they were far more qualified.

I went to high school with Kareem. Always a very nice, quiet kid who would do anything for anybody. I was deeply saddened to here of his death, but I'm sure he would be proud of this tribute from Mr. Powell.
i'm sorry but i totally disagree with this lovefest. i'll cut colin powell some slack: as far as republicans go, he's one of the better ones. but i will not forgive him for giving us the iraq war. hundreds of thousands of muslims have died for nothing -- i hope he can sleep at night when he remembers that.
